Magazine Cover - Final

We took audience feedback into account and corrected spelling and grammar as well as rearranging the "freebie" poster image at the bottom. We choose to do this as the bottom right corner was getting crowded. We also lightened the words "free movie poster" at the bottom of the cover so as easier to read.

This photo shoot was mainly taken for the film poster, they are in character here. We wanted to capture the autumn as that's when the film is set. It's a romantic time of year and we felt the nature they manage to surround themselfs in was a nice jutapostion to the 21st century modern way they met. (on the internet)

This photoshoot was taken for our film magazine. We wanted to get pictures of the cast being them selfs. We made them wear all white to keep it neutral, in order to accentuate them and not the clothes they may have been modeling. We used a simple white background to so that we could use it as a backgound for our magazine.

Magazine Cover Progress

This is a screen shot of us working on our magazine cover in the program serif page plus. We have been working hard to make sure every thing is in perfect postition and have been trying to make it as professional as possible at the moment.

As our film is set to 'release' on valantines day we decided to make the cover a valantines theme. This also meant we could carry on with the theme of Red and white which is prominant throughout all three of the media texts we ahve created. This gives a sense of continuity and familiarity to it, making it more likely that the audicence with recognise it.

We made the title of @ccidentally in love quite large to catch the audinces attention, and have caught the attention of Rob by writing a small feature on him. As well as this we have included a Photo film roll. This was something we had wanted to use on our website as we had great photos that we didn't want to go to waste. We ended up finding the image of the camera film on a website and were able to copy into onto our poster and adjust the sizes without a problem.

We also chose to include a the feauture of a free movie poster. This meant we could use a small picture of our poster on there, pnce again connecting our three texts and making it recognisable to the audience.

As well as this we we chose to add some writing on two other current and popular films, as a film magazine does not just focus on one film. It also keeps it up to date and interesting.

We chose the same Supreme as it's a bit of a play on the word empire. It denotes power and authority, making our magazine more likely to be taken seriously.

When chosing a picture to put on the front we had many choices as we have done two photoshoots. Two of the main contenders were:

As you can see we chose the photo on the left. This was because although the picture of them on the right is very nice and captures the essence of the film well, it has quite a few problems to it. One being the fact you can't really see much of Lucy's face. This is not wise for a magazine as the front cover is meant to really sell the poeple on it, therefore although it's a very sweet picture, it would make it more difficult for an audience to recognise her later. They are also very close to the camera and the top of the page. When putting out title at the top this could be an issue. As Lizzy say's in the post below, our magazine is not as old and established as Empire or Total film, therefore would it be wise to have their heads covering bits of our words?

The huge amount of colour on this picture would also make chosing a colour scheme difficult and whether or not it would show up on different colours.

The picture on the left how ever is perfect. The simple backgound has space around it for us to write things on in a simple colour scheme of our choice. It's also a natural and a 'real life' photo shoot, in which they are not in character. This is popular for a magazine to have it's own photo shoot with the cast if they are doing a main feature on them. As well as this the other pictures from this photo shoot fit in well with the colour scheme and look fitting when using them as small images on the front.

The large space at the top leaves us the space to establish our magazines name and theme of that month. This is important as this needs to stand out.

Overall our process of using serif page plus for this is going quite well. It enables us to move things in well and use text. However we cannot crop photos on this, which means we have to do this in other programs, this can cause issures when measuring the size of the page etc. As well as this there are a limited amount of fonts. However we have managed to fing quite a good one on it called Gill Sands Condensed, which is similar to empires, but quite different too. We like it becuase it's bold and has a similar feel to that of the font used at the bottom of film posters. This keeps the theme of movies running all the way through.

Magazine research!

This Magazine Cover is from the Magazine "Total Film" one of the biggest Film magazines rivaling Empire on the market. The example I have used here is promoting Sarah Jessica Parker, associated with her most famous show "sex and the city", which is written in very big bold red (sexual connotations) writing next to her picture. This grabs our attention, we will be using a similar method, getting the reader to connect the picture with the text beside it that matches.

We have been having trouble design the magazine cover, we find often that these magazines are aimed at men, and to promote a Rom-com on the front of one is very daring, the cover I have found of Sarah Jessica Parker is a rare exception, we hope to make it work and appeal to both sexes.

There are many decisions we have to make, where we want the picture to go, does it go on top of the magazine title or underneath? Empire magazine chosen between this freely, but our magazine is meant to be new and unheard of, is it sensible to put a photo on top of the title? Other decisions we have to make is the colour scheme, do all the sub titles match the main title, what will the title of our magazine be? Possible ideas are "Realm" and "Supreme" (puns on the name Empire)

From these we are able to see the vast majority of choice we have, the colours match the picture and theme of the film, it is important for us to get this right in order for our magazine to Sell.

CHANGE OF PLAN.
We have decided against doing a website. This was because after doing further research on the specification we found that it's only the home page of the website that is marked. We feel that this would not give us enough realms to explore. With a film magazine cover we are able to look at our film from a different perspective in which we are magazine editors, trying to sell our magazine, rather than the film itself.

On this magazine cover, we hope to show our persuasive and design skills that we are exposed to so much in todays media, and therefore have learnt from this.

Garage Band is an apply aplication on the mac computers that allows the user to edit music, this could anything from changing the volume to taking singing out of a song, it could be very usefull. We could use it to edit sounds for our website! -Lizzy

We used garage band because we have a voice over in which Lucy is Narrating at a small point at the start of the trailer. We also have a small bit of dialouge in which the sounds needed to be quiter too. To make this quiter we simply had to drag parts of the song higher or lower in order to make this quiter or louder. We the first time we did it we made it too quite a abrupt, it was very noticable to the people watching. Therefore we went back and editied the song, we made it go quiter more gradually so it was almost not noticable to the audience and also kept it at a level of volume in which you hear the talking but still feel the song. After the dialogue we then faded it up gradually but really well. The point in which we were doing this in this song was perfect as it was a small interlude in which the song was naturally meant to get louder. It was also leading up to the chorus of the song, this was great as it was the start of a new part of our trailer where we have a montage of Lucy and Ben smiling and on dates etc.

We chose the song 'What the sun come up' By Example. This is becuase it is a feel good song with a fun vibe. It has a stong feeling of romance about it which fits our film perfectly. As well as this is is also a popular song. As our Film is a Rom com it's most likely directed at a mainstream audience, therefore chosing a popular song that they would have heard, is a good idea as it increases the chance them liking it and wanting to watch more of it. As we are not able to use a copyright song, we had to edit it a little. This was fine as we aloready needed to edit volume levels and fading in and out, so this dong is fine to use.

Recording the voice over was a lot easier than i thought it was going to be. We simply clicked on the part in which we wanted to record and then it would notify you when to start talking and we could stop it when we wanted. Getting this in time with Lucy took practice, but we managed to get it to the right amount of time which meant it looked great when said over the oxford city shyline shot!

Overall, I think the editing process has gone really smoothly. Lizzy and I worked very hard for a whole day. Once we had routhly edited it to the order we wanted the shots, we then edited them to perfection to make sure it had good continuity. For example, if there was a slight pause at the start of each person's line, we would be sure to carefully cut this out as it needs to be quick and sharp to make the conversation look natural and flowing.

We also had a shot at the begining that was very long. It showed the camera panning up Lucy's arms typing to her face, an introduction to both the main character and the theme of the film (internet love). This shot, however, was far too long and got the trailer off to a slow start. So we recently edited it so that as the shot moves up her arm, there are quick flashes of her hands typing inbetween this. This it a very quick thing and it goes perfectly with the music, in which there is a particulary quick beat. It's a quirky introduction, with a professional edge. It was quite fiddly to do as each shot is only 0.1 second each, therefore doing this on an apple mac with a difficult mouse was a challenge but we managed it.

We also changed the end again recently. It used to be a very conventional and funny ending, of Lucy walking into a glass door. It was an incredibly funny shot and the loud bang to end the trailer was a great dramatic ending. However the shot looked quite unprofessional and there was something that just wasn't quite right about it. I was also filmed in school, therefore the surroundings didn't really look believeable for our character of Lucy, who would be most likely to do this in a shopping mall or some where different. So in the end we decided to change it to a shot shot of lucy dancing by the lake in the park. It has a great mis en scene in which she is to the left of the screen dancing and the lake is on the other side. It's a far away long shot, wich captures the beautiful surrondings that a majority of the shots are in. It's an autunmy feel, which leaves you with a feel good feeling. Although not as funny as her walking into the door, it is still rather funny and ends the trailer on a high as it looks like quite a professional shot too.

We have also made the title cards look more professional too now. Before they were in a boring font that didn't look professional and was in just the colour white. Whereas we have now changed them to a similar font used in our poster to create a running theme and also put certain letters in red too. This creates a connection and continutity between our poster and the red also denotes love and passion which is a strong theme in this film. This also fits well as it is made Valentines day, therefore when writing the release date we were sure to make some of it in red. When showing the title was also used the same design as on our poster, this makes it regonisable which is an important selling point.

At the moment we have handed our film in as a draft and are going to see what the teachers think and take their advice on what we need to improve. We know we still need to add this to the start of the trailer:

Editing the trailer.

We have spent two separate days editing our trailer and it is almost done, only needs a few touch ups! Very existing. Although not without miss-hap's and complications of plenty!

The easy part was putting a rough cut together, simply placing the shots in the order we wanted, this was nice as most of our trailer is a kind of montage of Ben and Lucy's time together, we could pick and choose the best of what we had and enjoyed doing so, it gave us time to reflect on what we could have done better if we had had the time and patents. We went along with the story board for most of the trailer but found that in the end it was better to make shots more continues, so they gave out some of the plot line. We felt this was better for the audience as it would make more sense to them and thus more interested in seeing our movie.

After a rough edit we started to cut the shots to perfection, we needed to cut out small things like when Lucy looks at the camera and Rob entering a room at the right time, there were problems such as things being in the shots that shouldn't be there, this would have made the trailer look very unprofessional.

When are trailer started to look how we imagined it we had to find a song that suited it. This proved more difficult than we envisioned, Helena and I having diff rent taste and us having so many songs to test out. At first we wanted to use 2 different songs either fading them into each other or stopping the first one for Lucy's dialogue, we even tryed to edit the music and put it on a loop in the background but this sounded very unprofessional, in the end we found a song that we both liked "Watched the Sun come up" by Example we found it went with the trailer not only from the way it sounded but also the message it sent out about love. We used garage band something that neither of us had ever used before but we found quite easy to get used to and we changed the volume of the song in different parts so that when there was dialogue in the trailer and voice over (which is yet to be recorded by Lucy) the music was quiet etc.

The overall result was very pleasing, we should be finished by the end of this week, the only problems being the title cards which we would like to look more professional and the last shot which ends on a messy note.

Lizzy and Helena's website preparation

Lizzy and I spent a long time looking at film websites before we designed ours. We realised, that almost all the more recent sites we looked at had welcome pages im which the trailer is shown along with a large picture..and THEN the option to 'Enter site', rather than go straight to a home page. We have decided to do this as we think its a very current theme to do, especially with Rom Coms. It will make the wesite look more professional and will also give us a chance to show off our trialer.

We will then go onto the home page, which is undoubtedly one of the most important pages. As you can see from the template it will show lots of options on where the user will want to go to in the site, along with the option to see the trailer again. The website is an important selling point for any film, therefore we think it's very important that we get it to look as authentic as possible, in order to give our film versimilitude and be taken seriously.

We have decided to use a mixture of Serif page plus, in which you can do things in webpage size, and Dream Weaver, where we will be able to work in code too. Using both of these programs well give us the best of both worlds in being able to use something relitively easy, but then having a chance to alter it in the dream weaver, in order to give it a professional edge. Of corse this is just the plan for how the progress will go, but we are prepared! -Helena

Website template/Layout - Rough

This is the template for our website, its very rough so apologies, we are just getting to grips with the programme "Serif page plus" We used it for out poster but it is very different for websites. From making the templates we know where we want to put all our titles photos and what content we want on the website. We wanted things like premier photos, interviews and a photo gallery along with our trailer which will appear on the website twice. The websites will have the same kind of colour scheme that our poster had, Reds, whites and blacks for the titles and Autumn colours for the photos and hyperlinks. There will be recurrent themes of leaves.
We have decided to have another photoshoot where all the characters are involved so that we can have photos for them on their biographys. Maybe we will have photos of ourselfs as directors to put on as well. Watch this space.

Final draft of poster...For now!

This is our final draft! I managed to overcome the size problem of the photo by cropping the photos and then enlarging them. The photos were too big before to fit on the page completely. But we realised that cropping them and making them close up makes the audience focus on their eyes and face more making it more romantic. We are very please with this final draft as it is how we imagined it to be. We think it looks very professional especially with the font used at the bottom of the poster. (which we found from a very use full website source) We were also pleased with the 5 star quote from Empire a known film magazine and with the date of the film realise, February 14th which again goes with the love theme.
Possible improvement that we have been thinking about are: Putting "from the directors of Max Kill" mine and Helena's last film, this is common of film posters and rearranging the photos so that all the written information is inbeween the photos.

Conventions of a Romantic Comedy

Romantic comedies are movies with light-hearted, humorous dramatic stories centered around romantic ideals such as a "true love" or the "perfect couple." Romantic comedy films are a sub-genre of comedy films as well as of romance films.

One of the conventions of romantic comedy films is the encounter of two partners in unusual or comic circumstances, known as the 'meet cute' situation. In our film we have developed quite an idividual 'meet cute' situation where they meet over the internet. Therefore when meeting each other in realy life it leads to quite comic circistances in order to cover up the lies they have told each other.

The film has morals and idealogies that believe in true love and having faith that love will conquer all. This is shown as, stereotypically, the characters have to fight to make sure their relationship works out. It all works out in the end and, of corse, there is a happy ending.

Storyboard

This is our storyboard of out film:

We drew each picture when talking about what kind of shots we wanted in our trailer. We followed it quite well when filming and made sure we covered all of it, but at the same time we didn't completely stick to it. We let our selfs film shots that we thought of at the time too, this gave us the freedom to use our spontaneous imaginations and is going to give us a wider range of choice when editiing. Therefore this storyboard is a very lose idea of what our film will be like. Although not all the shots may not be exactly the same, it is a good idea of the order and structure we are using to make the trialer.

We have tried to get a range of shots in, both long and short, in order to show variation in the trialer and to show off our knowledge and abilities. We haven't choosen lots of complicated shots such as tracking on a dolly or big swerves as it's only a small trialer therefore we wanted to pack as much in as possible.

We have a mixture of angles and use different lengths to give different effects within our shots. For example the close up shots are usually used to show moments of intense emotion. A particular example of this in our tralier is the entreme close up of Lucy crying. It intesifies the emotion for the audience and gives them an idea of the kind of things in the film.

We also have shots they set the scene, giving the audience an idea of our location, a very important ingredient to many a Richard Curtis Rom Com. Therefore we took the oppurtunity to take a pan of the beautiful Oxford City Sky Line. This is not only an impressive shot to use as it shows our variation and ability, but it also is a striking view that draws the audience in. We also have other shots that quickly set the scene of the room or the moment, day or evening that the part of the film is shot in. An example of this is the shot of the 'Wine scene' with the three women sat around the table. This gives a good idea of mise en scene.

We chose to have a birdseye shot of some hands typing at a computer, that is used more than a couple of times through out the trialer. This keeps the theme of the fact they met on the internet in mind and is nice idea of bringing everything in the film back to the fact the whole relationship started there. We are also using black outs as a dramtic effect in the trailer. They are often used in film trailers and give emphasise to the line before. They are also a useful device of moving on in the trialer to a new setting, character or subject.

Website Research

I Have been looking at websites, at the information that is on them and what kind of methods they use to get their information across. The love actually one is very complex, it has videos of each character in their particular scene. This means lots of hyperlinks all linked to pages of videos, I hope that for our website we can do a similar thing but instead of videos have information about each character. The colours and themes of the website should match the poster and the font we use in the trailer. Below is a link to the website:

I have also been looking at the You've got mail website, the website has made use of the theme of mail, it uses the same sounds and logos that are used for email to tell us a bit about what the movie is about. It to has hyperlinks to different sections, the hyperlinks are quote from the film "Do you think we should meet" etc. It uses the same font that is used in the film and on the poster, even on the dvd. I hope our websites ends up being a bit more advanced than this one, a bit more modern, with more detail, more photos of the characters.

Another website I have found it the Music and Lyrics website, this has loads of stuff for people to do, view pictures, downloads, "create your own 80s glam band" and other such things, it is a very high standard website. I like the photo that is used on the main page, but it would be impossible for Helena and I to create something like that first hand.

Poster Research

When thinking about the kind of poster we wanted to create, we started by looking at muliple Rom com posters. We particulary liked the poster for 'I Could Never be your Woman'...

We really liked the two simple pictures that focused on the two main characters faces. Showing expressions that fitted their personalities. The fact it's pictures of both a woman and man, tells the audience that straight away it's going to be a love story.

The font is simple but effective, the colour red captures the audience and emphasizes certain words. The flower gives the poster a girlier feel, but doesn't give the impression that it's not something boys could enjoy too. I think it's subtle but effective as it pays that little bit more attention to the female audience, the kind of audience who are more likely to see the film.

We also looked at a very similar poster from another Rom Com called 'The Holiday':

Once again it follows the classic conventions of a Romantic Comedy poster. The two pictures show loved up couples who are the main characters. The font is simple but pretty and overall it captures the essence of what the film is about.

Although we could have gone for the classic 'lean' convention that is shown in many film posters such as 'Pretty Woman', we dicided that the this theme often shows seductivity or immaturity in characters, which is not what we want to convey. We want to convey a mature relationship that is based on love.

Along with the poster we are currently creating we are looking at creating a poster similar to that of '500 days of Summer'..

This is because we like the idea of multiple pictures that build up an essence of character in the poster. We also have alot of fantastic photos from our photo shoot that would be a shame to waste as they have a lot of potential. After playing around, we quickly came up with a very ROUGH copy, just to get an idea..

Film Pitch

Pitch:
When Ben's friend sets him up on an internet dating account he doubts that he'll ever find love. But when he gets typing to the beautiful but blonde Lucy, the possiblity of finding happiness becomes more and more hopefull. When the descision to meet is made, both Lucy and Ben find themselves getting into hilarious ordeals, in order to cover up the ridiculous 'white lies' they let each other in on. Will these fabrications get in the way ,or will the beauty of blossoming love in the Autumn prevail?

A problem we found about this poster is that the photos will not stretch to the edge and have enough space in the middle to write information in. We are trying to overcome this problems by trying with different photographs. -Lizzy

Blooper Reel

The bloopers from our film (mind you this is only a small proportion) We have decided to use Adobe Premiere pro 1.5 as its installed on our laptops and we can spend time out sides school editing if we need to. This was an excellent practice for us both as we would love to use some new techniques such as a split screen effect. Enjoy :D

'It's a wrap!'

We have officailly finished filming our film! Yesterday we spent the afternoon finishing off the remaining shots in the film and today I filmed one last one (Lucy walking into a glass window!). The whole process has gone surprisingly smoothly, compared to the trials and tribulations we had last year, such as lighting and tripod issues. But I feel we have come along way since then and Lizzy agrees, for example, we planned out our locations and the time of day we shot in much better this year. We made sure there was always an appropriate amount of light and took the framing and mis en scene very seriously.

We should hopefully be able to start editing by Friday, a much quicker advance in the project than we thought. Soon we will be able to upload a Pitch and our story board ,which we have worked hard on to get the shots how we wanted!

First day of filming 26/10/09

A very productive day, we completed at least half of our film, the shooting went extremely well, the weather conditions were perfect and the only issue we had was low camera battery which was easily resolved. We plan to schedule another shoot for next week and if everything goes to plan we shall we ready to edit by the second week of term.

The Photoshoot For Poster

We got our two main actors together, Rob and Lucy, dressed them in wintry clothing and took photos of them in the roles of their characters. We used a digital camera to take these photos which was a new experience for Helena and I, we had taken photos before but never for a purpose, having to tell the actors what to do, instructing them to move in a certain way was very exciting, we got a feel for what it will be like directing them in the filming process.

This photograph could be used for a number of things, either the side of the website or a poster.

Over all Helena and I think that the photo shoot went extremely well, was a better outcome than we could have hoped for. Especially as we took the photos at the back of the school Field.

Inspirational Trailers

500 days of summer.
We have chosen to look at this trailer as it is for a film with similar ideas to our own. We liked the way the music went with the montage of footage from the film, we hope to use a similar idea but without the voice over instead replacing it with a few short scenes from the film to give the audience an idea of what the film is about. From looking at the trailer we have taken notes of what we need to include, the production company logo for instance and the release date of the film should definitely be in the trailer. We liked the way the montage followed the couples relationship and we are going to use similar shots.

This trailer is less emotional than the first, it captured the comedy elements that we wanted at the end of our trailer. We want to show that our film is a comedy and so wanted to end it with something humorous just as in this film "thank god it vibrates" is the ending line showing the audience that this is a rom-com. We are going to take elements of both trailer to make our trailer look right for out film. We want it less epic than 500 days of summer and more towards to comedic side of Valentines day.

Just a post to say welcome to our blog. We have started discussing our film and have come up with a very good idea of a rom-com based synopsis, around the life's of two single loners who look towards the Internet for help. We have been inspired by films such as "You've got Mail" directed by Nora Ephron and staring Tom Hanks.
